Safety Design in Buildings, Muscat Conference November 06, 2017 at Crowne Plaza Muscat SDiB is the leading debating platform for safety and fire professionals in the construction industry. Initiated in collaboration with Intersec in 2012, the Safety Design in Buildings conference campaign debates safety standards and practices in the built environment. Expert Talks discuss improved protection of people and buildings by looking while looking at trends in the GCC and construction sector generally. The conference brings leading Fire Safety Consultants, Architects, Engineers and Testing Experts together with Safety System Suppliers to give updates on industry standards and provide a debating platform for best practice. Under the theme of “Safety Design 2020 – Strategies and Implementation” the current cycle of events provides its participants with insights into: Risk assessments for buildings with combustible cladding Holistic fire safety design An update to operational technologies for fire safety management Building accessibility and egress standards … and more Program 08.00 – 09.00 Registration & Breakfast 09.00 – 09.15 “Welcome and Opening” Session I : Safety Design 2020 – review of safety standards in buildings Chairman : Andy Dean, Head of Façade Engineering | WSP 09.15 – 09.45 James A. Bychowski, Senior Vice President | JENSEN HUGHES “Case study for conducting risk assessments for buildings with combustible cladding” JENSEN HUGHES will share with designers and building owners methods for determining combustible properties of existing building cladding through minimally invasive testing and for conducting risk analysis on buildings with moderate to highly combustible cladding to determine if cladding replacement is necessary. The presentation will also discuss potential methods for reducing risk of exterior cladding fires in high-rise buildings. 09.45 – 10.15 John Noone, Co-founder – Fire Engineering | Joule Group “Fire Safety Design & Technology for Operational Readiness in 2020” The presenter discusses holistic fire safety design, with particular emphasis on sustainable design by integration of operational and end user requirements into the fire strategy design process. All too often designs are purely driven to satisfy code requirements or to obtain approval and ultimately may not meet operator or end user requirements. Many new technologies are now available to support operators manage fire safety in their buildings which can be considered during the design process. The launching of a new operational facility involves complex interactions of people, process, technology and environment – the presenter gives an outline of the technology that can facilitate a greater level of fire safety awareness and implementation 10.15 – 10.45 Elie Ghoussoub, Principal Consultant | WSP “Safe Access To All” With the GCC region getting ready to host global events in the next few years, it is encouraging to see that accessibility is garnering additional attention in professional circles. Universal Accessibility interfaces with the built environment in many areas, including safety, maintenance and facilities management. Today’s presentation will discuss the main components of accessibility in the built environment and highlight the safety implications of inaccessible premises. 10.45 – 11.00 Panel Discusssion on System Integration 11.00 – 11.30 Coffee Break Session II : Safety Design 2020 – review of safety access and related materials and technologies Chairman : Andy Dean, Head of Façade Engineering | WSP 11.30 – 12.00 Altaf A. Afridi, Regional Marketing Director – MENA | dormakaba “Architectural Openings, Codes and Standards” Architectural openings are more about Life Safety than egress and fire rating only. The automatic and manual revolving, sliding or swing door can be hazardous for users unless properly designed as per relative standards and codes. More so when we deal with frameless glass assemblies and the user group includes disabled, elderly people and children. Also, adding security hardware may cause safety issues for doors. The presentation will focus on these points, what relative codes and standards say about these and how these can be handled. The presenter will also focus on how BIM (Building Information Modeling) can help us in achieving safe building in today’s complex building systems. 12.00 – 12.30 Andy Dean, Head of Façade Engineering | WSP “Reviewing Glass: Heights, Balustrades and Existing Buildings” Glass selection is an extremely important phase of the design process. It is particularly important when it is used as a barrier between people and a hazard such as a height. We will highlight the associated technical issues and also address the limitations of retrofitting glass on existing buildings. 12.30 – 13.00 TBA 13.00 – 13.15 Panel Discussion on Integration of Security and Safety Concepts 13.15 – 14.15 Lunch Speakers James A. Bychowski John Noone Elie Ghoussoub Altaf A. Afridi Andy Dean Senior Vice President | JENSEN HUGHES Co-founder – Fire Engineering | Joule Group Principal Consultant – Health, Safety & Risk Management | WSP Regional Marketing Director – MENA | dormakaba Head of Façade Engineering | WSP To see the updated program online click here… To register your attendance click here… Looking forward to welcoming you at the conference,
